GRAMMY-AWARD WINNING ENSEMBLE PREMIERES NEW MASS

“And On Earth, Peace: A Chanticleer Mass” features movements by five contemporary composers

San Francisco, April 16, 2007 – Chanticleer, the internationally-acclaimed, 12-man vocal ensemble, announces “And On Earth, Peace: A Chanticleer Mass.” A celebration of the life of Chanticleer’s founder, Louis Botto, at the tenth anniversary of his death, the Mass is a significant milestone in Chanticleer’s long history of commissioning new works and supporting contemporary composers. Each of the five movements of the Mass is written by individual composers from various cultural and musical backgrounds: Bay Area native Douglas J. Cuomo, Turkish-American Kamran Ince, Israeli-born Shulamit Ran, London-born Ivan Moody, and Dublin-born Michael McGlynn.

The movements have been dedicated to the memory of eminent San Franciscans. The Kyrie is dedicated by Ann Moller Caen to the memory of Herb Caen; the Gloria is dedicated by the Bob Ross Foundation to the memory of Supervisor Harvey Milk; the Credo is dedicated by Gerald B. Rosenstein and Patrick J. Summers to the memory of James H. Schwabacher, Jr.; the Sanctus is dedicated by Mrs. Alfred S. Wilsey to the memory of Alfred S. Wilsey; the Agnus Dei is dedicated by Stephen K. Cassidy to the memory of Frances Cassidy.

The West Coast Premiere will take place on Friday, May 18, 2007 at Grace Cathedral. Tickets ($25-$44) are available through City Box Office (415-392-4400 or 800-407-1400) or online at www.chanticleer.org (See calendar listing, over)

Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretation of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Chanticleer also has a long history of commissioning new works and supporting contemporary composers.

With its seamless blend of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices”. Hailed by The New Yorker as “America’s favorite choral ensemble,” the GRAMMYâ Award-winning group in 2006-07 performs more than 100 concerts across the United States, along with a tour to Europe, and will reach more than 1200 students through their educational programs.
