CHANTICLEER PERFORMS BRUMEL’S EARTHQUAKE MASS

Concert of Rarely-Heard Renaissance Masterpiece Marks Centenary of Another Great Quake, in San Francisco

For tickets, call 800-407-1400 or click here.

San Francisco, February 13, 2006—Chanticleer, the internationally-acclaimed, 12-man vocal ensemble, will mark the centenary of San Francisco’s “Great Quake” of 1906 with performances of Antoine Brumel’s Earthquake Mass (Missa Et ecce terrae motus). Named for the Easter antiphon (…and behold the earth moved), Brumel’s Earthquake Mass is a complex, grandly-scaled and deeply moving work. Earthquake Mass will be performed in three striking venues in the Bay Area: San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral on March 24 and 31; Mission Santa Clara on March 25 and Berkeley’s St. Mark’s Church on April 1. Click here to read program notes.

Tickets ($25 - $42) are available through City Box Office (415-392-4400) or online .(See  Calendar Listing, below.)

Also on tap for Chanticleer is a performance of EarthSongs, a program of music based on nature poetry, at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis on Sunday, March 26 at 3pm. (See Calendar Listing, below.)

The ensemble has just completed a seven-country tour of Europe, including a well-received debut at Vienna’s famed Musikverein and a return visit to the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.  In a startling change of pace, Chanticleer appears as guest artist in a Valentine’s-themed concert entitled “Hearts and Flowers” on February 16 at Davies Sympony Hall starring jazz/pop legend Al Jarreau and featuring other jazz luminaries including singer DeeDee Bridgewater, violinist Regina Carter and saxophonist Harry Allen.  Tickets are available by calling the Davies box office, 415-864-6000.

Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretations of vocal literature,  from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. With its seamless blend of twelve male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices.” Hailed by the New Yorker magazine as “America’s favorite choral ensemble” and praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “luxurious perfection,” the GRAMMY® Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer in 2005-06 performs over 80 concerts in 16 states across the U.S. along with tours to Japan and Europe.
