Audition Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some questions which we are often asked by people who are thinking of auditioning. If you have any questions about auditioning, please e-mail auditions@chanticleer.org.

What kind of training do I need to get into Chanticleer?

Virtually every level of musical and academic training has been represented in Chanticleer at some time. There are currently singers holding master's degrees in music, singers who were music majors in college, and singers who developed their skills in church, school or community groups. The most important criteria are to have good overall musicianship and understanding of music in general, to have interest and experience in diverse styles of music, and to have flexibility of voice in terms of style and range. Sight-singing, vocal technique and aural skills are required.

As to whether it is better to have had primarily a choral background or a solo background, one is not necessarily better than the other. Naturally, as a choral group, Chanticleer requires a sense of and ear for ensemble. But, as with many aspects of our music making, the diverse backgrounds of the individual members enrich the whole.

Can you describe the audition process?

Click here for information on the audition process. Basically, all singers are invited to submit an audition CD or tape which will be reviewed by our music director. Auditions are held each year for all voice parts. Based on the recordings, singers may be selected to travel to San Francisco to join us in a weekend of both solo and ensemble demonstration.

What kinds of pieces should I put on my audition recording?

The most important thing is to offer pieces that you are comfortable with and that show your strengths and contrasting styles. We request that audition CDs (or tapes) contain a foreign-language aria or art song, and a piece in English in a more popular style - such as a jazz standard, a musical theater song, or virtually anything lighter.

How do I know if there is an opening?

Auditions are held every year regardless of whether openings are available.

How long do most members of Chanticleer stay in the group?

Just as singers come to Chanticleer at many different stages of life, they leave the group after varying amounts of time as well. Our current most experienced member is Eric Alatorre, who joined the ensemble in 1990. Music Director Joseph Jennings has been with Chanticleer since 1982. Other singers stay for only a few years or less; many stay between five and ten years. Singers are offered contracts on an annual basis.

How much do singers get paid?

Membership in Chanticleer is a full-time, salaried position, with health and other benefits. Singers must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information on specific salary rates, please contact our administrative office.

Does Chanticleer only accept singers from the United States? Are there any other restrictions on membership?

Apart from being an all-male ensemble, Chanticleer welcomes eligible members from all countries and backgrounds. Non-U.S. citizens must have a valid work visa in order to accept employment.

How do I know when I'm ready to audition for Chanticleer?

Feedback from your teachers and colleagues should help you decide when you are ready to audition. Ask your voice teacher to review your audition application tape and packet before sending it in. Auditioning is a valuable experience in itself, and will help you decide if you are ready for a career.
