The Mission San Miguel is a few miles north of Paso Robles, alongside Highway 101. 12 Friars live there. On our 2008 tour we performed outdoors in the courtyard because the sanctuary had been badly damaged in the l989 Loma Prieta earthquake. There seemed not much hope at the time that it would be restored, but it has been and it's very beautiful. After a scenic drive from Santa Barbara, we gave a matinee performance, our 9th of the Bolivian-Mexican baroque program which debuted in Bolivia in April. We've loved the music and all the missions, and performing with Fred on the organ, Craig Russell on two guitars, and Lisa Nauful on her bassoon Fritz, a famous instrument once owned by a player in the MGM orchestra. The bassoon can be heard on all the MGM scores between the late 20's and 50's. We were happy to have him along. We mention him now because the acoustic at San Miguel is especially good for woodwinds, and Fritz had a great day today! We'll miss the mission road, but we're going home now for our final concert of the Bay Area season: Washing of the Water.
