There was a record 5 inch snow fall in Michigan the other night, but we made our way safely from E. Lansing to Chicago by way of Detroit, and are now snug inside the magnificent gothic 4th Presbyterian Church on the Miracle Mile where the Chicago Symphony presents us in two Christmas concerts every year.  Holst's "In the bleak midwinter" - one of our all-time audience Christmas favorites- has so much more resonance  in these cold places than it will when we get back to California on Thursday (although we always think it's freezing in Palo Alto and Santa Clara and Carmel, those places have nothing on Chicago - and it's not even mid-winter!)
