LAB 8 started on Saturday, and we're headed into a retreat weekend full of rehearsals (for most musicians, we sacrifice holidays to work). This group has 24 singers who come from all corners of the Bay: Sacramento and Davis, Santa Rosa and Petaluma, Palo Alto, Orinda and Lafayette, El Cerrito, and San Francisco. It's striking the number of singers who return to the LAB Choir, even after starting college. LAB 8 has 21 LAB veterans! As a fun way of showing audiences how many and in which LAB sessions each singer has participated, we printed some stickers to put on our performance binders. They were a huge hit among the singers!
Probably one of the greatest things about having so many seasoned veterans in the group is that they spontaneously rehearse. When I returned from the lunch break, every singer was already gathered around the piano, singing through a Renaissance piece we hadn't yet rehearsed officially. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a spoiled director.
