LAB Director Ben Johns reports from LAB X's inaugural meeting last Saturday

LAB X kicked off this Saturday with a theme of Piracy and Treasure (repertoire includes medleys from Pirates of the Caribbean and The Pirates of Penzance, some authentic Bay Area sea chanties, and Renaissance/early Baroque/Romantic era "treasures")

We have 22 singers in this session.   3 are brand new to LAB, 5 have done only Skills/LAB before, 11 participated in LAB 9, and the remaining 3 were in LAB 7 or 8.  Since the beginning, three years ago, LAB has had an impressive rate of repeat participation.  The average number of sessions per LAB X singer is 3.45.  Toran Davenport is returning for his 9th session (these include Skills/LABs)
LAB singers come from all over the Bay Area.  This time, 9 live in the East Bay (Concord, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Albany), 4 live in the North Bay (Santa Rosa, Petaluma), 4 live in the South Bay (Palo Alto and San Jose), 5 live in San Francisco.
4 LAB X singers are currently in college, the rest are in high school.
As a special project, each singer is transcribing a sea chanty.  Some of these chanties come to us from old 1930s wax cylinder recordings of Bay Area sailors.
We have concerts pending on the evenings of March 16 and 29.
