Education Director Ben Johns says it’s a ‘feel-good time of year’

This is a feel-good time of year. Now into its third full year, the LAB Choir is seeing a good number of students who are applying to college music programs. And that gives me opportunities to reflect on student accomplishments and exciting futures. I love pointing out the strengths of these talented young singers!

On Thursday, LAB 7 gave their latest performance: this one at Salem Lutheran Retirement Home in Oakland. This was the second of two retirement home visits this session. The first was on Saturday, Nov. 10 for Stratford at Countrywood in Lafayette (pictured here). Both performances were extremely well received! We really enjoyed the audience interaction and surprisingly good acoustics. Next for LAB 7 is a school visit to Bacich Elementary in Marin County on Dec. 5 and an appearance at the Acalanes High School Winter Concert on Dec. 18. If you'd like to hear LAB 7 on the 18th (that is, for those of you not coming the Chanticleer's concert in Sacramento…), the concert starts at 7pm at the Acalanes Performing Arts Center, 1200 Pleasant Hill Road in Lafayette, CA. There are no physical tickets. They have a suggested donation of $5 for adults, $3 for seniors 60 and older and students, up to 18, are free. All seats are General Admission and the house will open at 6:30pm. The Acalanes HS choirs perform the bulk of the concert, showing off what LAB 7 co-director Bruce Lengacher can do!

LAB 8 is gearing up to start rehearsals in January. Auditions are on-going for the LAB Choir, but especially intense now since we're planning a session of Renaissance and Jazz music. This has been a productive month for SITS visits, working with about 10 choirs, and everywhere I go, I advertise the LAB Choir. I'm also busy editing some of the sheet music so the singers can learn it over the winter break. There are some tricky pieces planned!!! The highlight of LAB 8 will be an appearance at Chanticleer's 35th Anniversary gala event on March 22.
