CHANTICLEER PERFORMS SPANISH RENAISSANCE MASS
ENSEMBLE SINGS TOMÁS LUIS DE VICTORIA'S MASTERFUL "MISSA SALVE"
IN CONCERTS ACROSS THE BAY AREA IN MAY 2004

San Francisco, April 8, 2004-Chanticleer, the internationally-acclaimed, 12-man vocal ensemble, will perform Tomás Luis de Victoria's Missa salve next month in six concerts across the Bay Area. The Spanish Golden Age composer's mass, first published in 1592, will be performed in locales ideally suited to the music, including the historic Carmel Mission, San Francisco's Mission Dolores, and St. Joseph's Cathedral Basilica in San Jose, as well as First Congregational Church in Berkeley and St. Francis Church in Sacramento.

"The works of Victoria have a special meaning for Chanticleer, and we have recorded and performed several of his magnificent pieces," noted Chanticleer Music Director Joseph Jennings, "Missa salve is not only exquisite in its beauty; it has a perfection of textual and musical expression that deserves the highest level of artistry that we can achieve. The ensemble is looking forward to returning to our roots in early music as a finale to the Bay Area season."

Tomás Luis de Victoria was born in Avila in 1548 and is generally recognized as the greatest Spanish composer of the Renaissance. He studied and worked in Rome for many years, absorbing various European influences. Victoria's legacy was assured when he managed to publish most of his work during his lifetime with the help of wealthy and powerful patrons. Ordained a priest in 1575, Victoria wrote only sacred music.

"Tomás Luis de Victoria: Mass" will be performed on May 15 at 8pm and May 23 at 7pm at Mission Dolores in San Francisco; on May 16 at 7pm at St. Francis Church, Sacramento; on May 19 at 8:30pm at Carmel Mission; on May 21 at 8pm at St. Joseph's Cathedral Basilica in San Jose; and on May 22 at 8pm in Berkeley's First Congregational Church.

Single ticket prices are $34 and $37 for Reserved sections and $25 for General Admission seating. Tickets are available from City Box Office at 415-392-4400 or 800-407-1400 or online at www.chanticleer.org. For group sales of ten or more, contact Linda Graham at 415-346-7805.
