GRAMMY-AWARD WINNING ENSEMBLE RELEASES NEW RECORDING
“And On Earth, Peace: A Chanticleer Mass” features movements by five contemporary composers
San Francisco, April 27, 2007 – Chanticleer, the 12-man internationally-acclaimed vocal ensemble releases their 30th recording on May 8, 2007. “And On Earth, Peace: A Chanticleer Mass” will be issued by Warner Classics, for whom Chanticleer records exclusively.
This unique project includes the work of five dynamic contemporary composers who each contributed a movement of the mass. Film and television composer Douglas J. Cuomo wrote the Kyrie; Turkish-American Kamran Ince supplied the Gloria; Israeli-born Shulamit Ran supplied the Credo; London-born Ivan Moody wrote the Sanctus; and Irish composer Michael McGlynn wrote the Agnus Dei. The movements are in English, Latin, Hebrew, Gaelic, and Greek, and represent elements of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
The 12-track album also incorporates early music by Gabrieli and Gesualdo, creating a bridge between old and new. “We hope to give 21st century audiences a significant setting that embraces many musical and spiritual impulses,” says Joseph H. Jennings, Chanticleer’s Music Director. Each of the five composers was selected by Jennings for this project.
“And On Earth, Peace” will be performed in concert throughout the Bay Area in May and June, following the World Premiere on April 26, 2007 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Temple of Dendur, in New York City. (see dates and times, over)
Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretation of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Chanticleer also has a long history of commissioning new works and supporting contemporary composers.
With its seamless blend of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices”. Hailed by The New Yorker as “America’s favorite choral ensemble,” the GRAMMYâ Award-winning group in 2006-07 performs more than 100 concerts across the United States, along with a tour to Europe, and will reach more than 1200 students through their educational programs.
