Preliminary Audition materials

Digital preliminary audition materials deadline: December 1, 2026

Digital preliminary audition requirements:

  1. A current resume

  2. A brief cover letter in which you tell us a little about yourself and discuss why singing in a small ensemble, and Chanticleer in particular, is interesting or intriguing to you.

  3. Audio uploads that include:

    • One art song or aria in a foreign language (accompanied or unaccompanied)

    • One non-classical selection (e.g., jazz, folk song, popular, show tune - accompanied or unaccompanied)

    • A recording of you singing an excerpt (mm. 1-18) from “Music Dei donum optimi” by Orlando di Lasso. You can find a score here. Choose the part you think best suits your voice. This excerpt must be unaccompanied.

    • If you are a bass, please also include a recording of an excerpt (mm. 8-23) from “Journey to Recife,” arranged by Joseph H. Jennings. You can find a score here. Sing the lowest staff, follow the instructions to “imitate a string bass,” and sing on whatever syllables feel best. This excerpt must be unaccompanied. (If the low Bbs are too low, please feel free to sing them up the octave! This change will not disqualify you from the audition process.)

Notes on audition materials:

  • There are no fees associated with your application.

  • You will need to have or create a Google account in order to upload your files.

  • Please do not send physical materials.

  • Simple, phone-quality recordings are fine.

  • You may upload videos if you like, although videos are not required.

  • We’re looking for unique and exciting voices that are equally at home singing with others as they are singing as soloists.

  • Chanticleer prides itself on being comprised of 12 singers with a wide variety of skills. We hope that you will showcase your strengths. Don’t worry too much if portions of the audition materials requested are outside your comfort zone.
