6 BAY AREA PERFORMANCES, SEPTEMBER 17-25
SAN FRANCISCO, August 18, 2016 – The San Francisco based all-male vocal ensemble Chanticleer kicks off its 2016/17 Season with My Secret Heart, featuring a world premiere by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, and a revival of “Love Songs” written for Chanticleer by multiple award winning composer Augusta Read Thomas (recorded on the Grammy® awarding-winning album Colors of Love).
These modern pieces take their place on a program which penetrates the hidden places of the heart in music ranging from Chanticleer’s signature Renaissance repertoire, works by Mikhail Glinka and Sergei Rachmaninov, and arrangements of works by George Gershwin, Freddy Mercury, Francis Poulenc, and Noël Coward.
My Secret Heart will be presented in five Bay Area cities as Chanticleer begins its season-long tour to 28 states. Chanticleer’s season appearances include a lengthy European tour in January and February to Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland and Russia. Christmas sees the Ensemble return to the Bay Area for 12 performances of the group’s legendary A Chanticleer Christmas, which will also be heard on over 300 public radio stations nationwide. In March 2017, Chanticleer will collaborate with the New Century Chamber Orchestra for Americans in Paris; celebrating the artistic ferment of Paris in the 20’s and 30’s. The season will conclude with Psalm–transcendent prayers of thanksgiving and consolation, psalms of happiness and songs of praise–including a newly commissioned work by Pulitzer Prize winner John Harbison.
Chanticleer is under the Music Direction of William Fred Scott. A native of Georgia, he was the Founder and Artistic Director of the Atlanta Opera, as well as a well-known organist and choir director. He was Associate Conductor to Robert Shaw at the Atlanta Symphony and to Sarah Caldwell at the Opera Company of Boston. Before joining Chanticleer, he was Director of Choral Music at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta.
