SAN FRANCISCO, August 3, 2012—Chanticleer, the world-renowned 12-man a cappella ensemble, will celebrate its 35th anniversary during the 2012-13 season, starting with five performances of THE SIREN’S CALL around the Bay Area. The season opens on September 14th at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and continues in Lafayette, Santa Clara and Sacramento.
Temptation and its dangers are the subject of The Siren’s Call, which will feature new compositions by Chen Yi and Michael McGlynn, two composers long associated with Chanticleer. Musical seduction by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Padilla, Barber, Poulenc, Corigliano, Mantyarvi, and the Bay Area’s Mason Bates will culminate with a new arrangement for Chanticleer of “Temptation” by Tom Waits.
The season continues with the holiday classic, A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS: eleven concerts from December 10-23. Chanticleer’s beloved Christmas tradition is performed on both coasts, as well as on over 300 radio stations affiliated with American Public Media; the New Yorker declares, “No one does a better choral Christmas than the virtuoso male voices of Chanticleer.”
Founded in San Francisco in l978, Chanticleer reaches the 35-year milestone in 2013. A celebratory evening will be held at the San Francisco Conservatory on March 22nd, featuring the ensemble in a program of jazz, with guest artist Nellie McKay. Clerestory, Musae, and the Louis A. Botto Choir will also entertain. The season closes with six performances of LA SERENISSIMA in June, when the Ensemble returns to its early music roots and the sumptuous music of Renaissance Venice.
To be released in 2012-13 on the Chanticleer Records label are By Request—a studio recording of some of Chanticleer’s as yet unrecorded favorites—and a Chanticleer Live in Concert (CLIC) CD of The Siren’s Call.
Called “the world’s reigning male chorus,” by the New Yorker magazine, and named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008, Chanticleer will perform more than 100 concerts in 2012-13. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer will tour to 28 of the United States, and, for the third time, to the People’s Republic of China.
The ensemble has garnered three GRAMMY Awards, has commissioned more than 90 new works from 70 composers (and counting), lights up the faces of more than 5,000 students each year through outreach programs, and has performed with Frederica von Stade, Al Jarreau, and Garrison Keillor. Chanticleer’s Louis A. Botto (LAB) Choir, an after school honors program for students 14-20 goes into its third season. The group is often seen performing at schools, community centers, among other venues.
Chanticleer - based in San Francisco - is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music.
Concert tickets priced from $10-$65 may be purchased online at www.chanticleer.org or by calling 415/392-4400 or 800/407-1400.
