Chanticleer, the Bay Area’s internationally acclaimed, 12-man a cappella ensemble, holds its 13th Youth Choral Festival™ on Friday, October 18 at First Unitarian Universalist Church (1187 Franklin Street) in San Francisco. The Festival is a key event in Chanticleer’s education program, which in recent years has expanded to include the Louis A. Botto (LAB) Choir, an after school honors program for students 14-20. All Chanticleer education events are under the direction of Education Director Ben Johns, a former member of the ensemble.
High School choral groups attending the 2013 Youth Choral Festival are Albany High School (Albany, CA); Davis Senior High School (Davis, CA); Lowell High School (San Francisco, CA); Montgomery High School (Santa Rosa, CA); Palo Alto High School (Palo Alto CA).
After an intensive day of work with the men of Chanticleer, the five student groups join Chanticleer in concert at 7:30pm. The evening performance is free and open to the public, but seating is extremely limited and reservations are required. Chanticleer was awarded Chorus America’s prestigious Education and Outreach Award for 2010, and takes pride in its annual interaction with more than 5,000 students around the Bay Area and the U.S. The extensive and interlocked array of programs includes: Singing in the Schools, Youth Concerts, the Louis A. Botto LAB Choir, Youth Choral Festivals for high school and middle schools. Youth Choral Festivals are also regularly held around the country; in the current season in Darien, Connecticut, and Palm Desert, California. Chanticleer partners with Sonoma Bach Society and Sonoma State University to present Chanticleer in Sonoma, a bi-annual 5 day workshop for adult singers from around the world. During Chanticleer’s bi-annual winter tour of Europe, workshops will be offered for adult choral singers in Cork, Ireland and Vienna,Austria.
